JANUARY 29, NEW YORK - On Sunday, Jan. 31, 2021, from 11am to 12pm, Russian-Americans concerned with human rights abuses in Russia, as well as recent immigrants, refugees and asylees from Russia and their allies will hold a rally in front of the UN headquarters, in solidarity with Russia’s protesters urging the release of Alexey Navalny as well as over 350 other political prisoners. This rally is organized by American Russian-speaking Association for Civil & Human Rights (ARA), in response to the call by Navalny’s supporters. It is also a part of our long-term work of helping to bring about a peaceful transformation of Russia. We hold this rally in collaboration with dozens of Russian diaspora groups on four continents that are holding their own rallies today, including in front of the Office of the UN Human Rights Commissioner (Geneva) and of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (Vienna).
We will use this location to launch our appeal to the major international organizations of which Russia is a member. We will urge them to elevate the urgency of ending political persecutions in Russia and releasing its political prisoners to the top of their agendas and to make it an absolute priority in all their interactions with Russia’s officials, using the full range of their tools and procedures for this purpose. One of the most compelling reasons for doing this is that Russia currently stands on the verge of mass political terror, which would not only exacerbate threats to international peace but also trigger a humanitarian crisis bound to spill over beyond Russia’s borders. The poisoning and subsequent detention of Navalny accompanied by violations of Russia’s own laws let alone its international commitments has been a dangerous step in this direction. International institutions have more leverage than individual countries to convince Russia’s leadership to end political persecutions and to start a genuine dialogue with its internal opponents.
ARA has been a public awareness and organizing force in the community, particularly among political exiles, since 2012. ARA (founder and Managing Director – Dr. Dmitri Daniel Glinski, Co-Chairs of the Board – Tatiana Yankelevich Bonner and Dr. Pavel Sulyandziga) has produced testimonies for US Congress, joint Ukrainian-Russian rallies against the Kremlin’s military interference in Ukraine, and many educational public events, including at Columbia University, CUNY etc. ARA led the Russian-American delegation to the White House Ethnic/Heritage Day events in 2015 and 2016.
