Dear Igor,
When I took over the New York Republican Party just four short months ago, I pledged to rebuild, retool and revitalize the GOP from the ground up, and last night’s local elections marked the beginning of our comeback.
We had solid Republican wins in every region of the state, particularly in important battleground areas for 2020’s important congressional and state legislative races.
On Long Island, we swept Oyster Bay and Hempstead, taking back the largest town in America from Democrat control. We elected State Supreme Court judges and picked up a legislative seat in Suffolk. While we came up short in the Suffolk County Executive’s race, Republican John Kennedy did a phenomenal job securing 43% of the vote despite being outspent by a more than 5-1 margin.
In the important battleground of Staten Island, Republican Bob Helbock won the North Shore Civil Court judge seat, going red for the first time in 35 years. Staten Island City Councilman Joe Borelli ran a great race for Public Advocate and won his home borough overwhelmingly.
In the Hudson Valley, we had a big win in northern Westchester with the election of Matt Slater as Yorktown Supervisor, a sweep in Dutchess, including the resounding reelection of Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro, and a sweep in Columbia County, including the election of a Republican District Attorney. As of right now, the results in Ulster County are too close to call, but we remain optimistic for a majority county legislature and district attorney victories.
In the Capital Region, we swept all four State Supreme Court races in the 4th judicial district and had many big wins in Saratoga County. We went on offense in Colonie, where our Republican challenger is locked in a dead heat with the incumbent Democrat, and we are awaiting the final results tally.
We continued our great Republican victories across Upstate with the resounding election of Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon, Onondaga DA and the Onondaga County Clerk. Oneida County Executive Tony Picente also cruised to victory and we elected a Republican super-majority in the Oneida County legislature. In the North Country, we flipped the Clinton County legislature red and in Franklin picked up another seat in the county legislature.
In Monroe, we re-elected Republican District Attorney Sandra Doorley, despite George Soros funneling more than $1M to help the Democrat. We also held the majority in the county legislature, but unfortunately narrowly lost Monroe’s great County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo, who put up an incredible fight. We are so grateful to Cheryl for her work on behalf of Monroe County taxpayers.
In Western New York, we picked up a seat in the Erie County legislature, elected the first Republican supervisor of West Seneca in 50 years and the first Republican councilman in almost 20 years. We also won the majority on the Niagara Falls City Council. We went on offense against Democrat Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz and despite a 2-1 Democrat enrollment advantage and being vastly outspent, Republican Lynne Dixon ran a spirited race garnering 45% of the vote as the first female to run for Erie County Executive in its history. We thank Lynne for her hard-fought race.
In Broome County, we swept our State Supreme Court judge races and retained our majority on the Binghamton City Council. We swept all three contested seats in Democrat-heavy Johnson City and elected the first Republican Mayor of Endicott in more than a decade. We are awaiting the results of the Broome County DA’s race where it is another dead heat.
And finally, Republican Greg Borrello was resoundingly elected to the state senate from the 57th district.
There was cause for many celebrations across the state last night, but we are only getting started and we have much more work to do to rid Albany of the totalitarian Democrat rule that is destroying our state.
We were laser-focused on winning targeted areas that overlap with where we need to win back congressional and state legislative seats, and our successes were possible because of the hard work and generous investments of our Republican Party supporters like you.
The rebuilding of our Party will not happen overnight, but I’m incredibly energized and encouraged about our future.
Thank you for your support of the NYGOP and our efforts to deliver commonsense, effective government to the taxpayers of New York.
Sincerely,
Nick Langworthy
Chairman
