Donovan voted 'no'

"I could never support legislation that cuts taxes for everybody in the rest of the country and gives the bill to the people of Staten Island and Brooklyn," Donovan said.

The $1.4 trillion tax bill -- officially called the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act -- passed the House of Representatives on Dec.20 by a 224 to 201 vote. The bill passed the Senate, 51 to 48 votes. No Democrats voted for the bill in either house.

The new tax code will affect your 2019 filing for your income beginning in 2018.

President Donald Trump signed the tax bill into law before leaving for his Christmas break in Florida.

It's the first significant change in the U.S. tax code since President Ronald Reagan signed the Tax Reform Act of 1986 to simplify the income tax code, broaden the tax base and eliminate many tax shelters.
